Month Themes: Summer Kick-Off

July 1 - Canada Day 🇨🇦

Canada Day is the national holiday that celebrates the Canadian confederation which occurred on July 1, 1867. This year marks the 154th anniversary of Canada. If your team has offices located in Canada, plan a Canada Day celebration for them!

Idea: Some event ideas include a red and white dessert-making class, having a red and white outfit contest, or encouraging team members to go on a hike outside to enjoy some Canadian trails with their family.

July 4 - Independence Day 🇺🇸

Independence Day (aka 4th of July) is a federal holiday for Americans to celebrate and commemorate the declaration of independence of the United States that took place on July 4, 1776. Celebrations traditionally include picnics, BBQs, fireworks, and parades.

Idea: To celebrate the 4th of July with your team offer fun events for the whole family to join in on. Have a red, white, and blue dessert-making class, a cooking class for some BBQ favorites, send out picnic supplies to team members, or get everyone to dress up patriotically.

July 8 - Video Games Day 🎮

Video Games Day is an easy and fun way to bring your team together and play your favorite games online. You can even turn it into a competition where employees can come together and challenge each other in fan favorites like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros.

Idea: For a low-lift way to celebrate via a multiplayer game, use Jack Box Games, LOL Beans, or Among Us.

July 18 - International Nelson Mandela Day 🌟

Nelson Mandela Day is celebrated every year to celebrate and shine a light on Nelson’s legacy. He shows us the power of resisting oppression, of dignity over humiliation, of forgiveness over hatred, and of justice over inequality.

Idea: Host some learning talks and panel discussions on this monumental day to share the history and what employees can do in the present to help and support Nelson Mandela’s efforts.

July 21 - Junk Food Day 🍪

Every year on this day you can enjoy endless junk food favorites without feeling guilty as you are simply celebrating a special day! Bring out all of your favorites and treat yourself!

Idea: Send your employees a credit to Uber Eats or Instacart so they can order their favorite junk food treats to enjoy on this day. On Slack or MS Teams, you can also create polls to see what the top junk food treats are or a channel to share pics of everyone’s fun treats!

July 25 - International IVF Day 👩‍👧‍👦

This day signifies the scientific advancement and medical technique of IVF and celebrates the ability to help various couples with infertility. It has been over 40 years since the first baby was born via IVF.

Idea: Offer empathy circles or host intimate chats led by your team’s Women@ ERG to open the discussion and seek support from one another. You can also choose to empower related ERGs to host private panels and conversations - and provide support through budgets for books, resources, a meal, or snacks.

Ultimately, ensure this will be a safe space for employees to talk about their story and offer a listening ear.

July 26 - National Disability Independence Day 💛

National Disability Independence Day commemorates the day that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed in 1990. This act provides protection for those with disabilities to avoid employment discrimination.

Idea: Host a panel discussion with guest speakers or non-profits who can talk about this topic and share their stories and resources.

July 29 - Lasagna Day  🍽

What better way to celebrate a food-themed special day than encouraging your entire team to make this dish for their lunch or dinner. Turn it into a mini cooking event for the whole family, where employees can share their creations with the team.

Idea: For lasagna day offer to send employees the ingredients to make this meal or get everyone to share their favorite lasagna recipes on Slack or Teams.

July 30 - International Day of Friendship 🌻

This special day was designated by the UN and the very first World Friendship Day was proposed in 1958. It is a day to step back and be grateful for the friendships in your life. So make sure to spread the love and thank those special friends in your life.

The month of July is the start of planning and hosting some virtual (soon in-person) summer celebrations for your team.

The best way to celebrate this season is getting your employees to enjoy some time outside doing fun summer activities. With a few companies commencing their return to office during the summer, keep in mind that some hybrid events may need to be planned to accommodate all team members.

Larger summer events may be able to be in-person later this summer, so keeping an eye on covid guidelines and having a backup plan is a great place to start.
