This calendar is a guide for you and your team to use as you plan meaningful, internal events and activities virtually, hybrid or in-person for the month of May. Bring everyone together this month to focus on celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) and Mental Health Awareness Month.

Month Themes: Asian American and Pacific Islander Month and Mental Health Awareness Month

An important theme for May is celebrating AAPI Heritage Month to recognize the contributions of AAPI individuals to the history and culture of the U.S. It’s also important to address and raise awareness for the injustices of Asian hate that is happening across the world. Host a AAPI Month Wellness Class, AAPI Cultural Impact Class, or a AAPI History and Culture Trivia to raise awareness in the workplace. 

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting well-being. It's crucial to acknowledge the importance of mental health in the workplace and raise awareness about the challenges many individuals face. Consider hosting a Workplace Mental Health Workshop to help your team get started on the conversation about mental health in the workplace.

May 1 - National Infertility Survival Day 🌈

National Infertility Survival Day aims to raise awareness and offer support to those facing challenges related to infertility. 

Idea: Host a virtual support group or informational session, inviting experts to provide guidance and resources for employees dealing with infertility issues.

May 4 - Star Wars Day 🎞️

Star Wars Day is a celebration that unites fans worldwide in honoring the iconic Star Wars franchise.

Idea: Host a Star Wars viewing party for fans to gather and watch their favorite movie. Encourage attendees to bring their favorite snacks and dress in their best Star Wars attire! 

May 5 - Cinco de Mayo 🎉

Cinco de Mayo is a festive celebration of Mexican culture. It's an opportunity to promote diversity and appreciation for different cultural backgrounds within the workplace.

Idea: Organize a virtual cultural exchange event where employees can share aspects of Mexican culture, such as music, dance, or traditional recipes.

May 12 - Mother's Day 🌷

Mother's Day is a special occasion to honor and show appreciation for mothers and mother figures. It's a time to celebrate their contributions both at home and in the workplace.

Idea: Gather your team and learn to create beautiful, blooming spring wreaths in a virtual wreath-making class, encouraging employees to gift them to their mothers.

May 17 - World Baking Day 🍰

World Baking Day is all about the joy of baking and sharing delicious treats.

Idea: Host a virtual baking class for a sweet team bonding experience. Learn to make donuts, pretzels, pie, or bread with your team! 

May 17 - International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia 🏳️‍🌈

International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia is dedicated to raising awareness about discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community. It emphasizes the importance of fostering inclusivity in the workplace.

Idea: Conduct a diversity and inclusion training session, promoting understanding and acceptance, and creating a safe and supportive environment for all employees.

May 17 - Bike to Work Day 🚴‍♂️

Bike to Work Day encourages environmentally friendly commuting and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

Idea: Initiate a company-wide biking challenge, tracking the number of miles biked by employees. Offer incentives or recognition for those who participate.

May 21 - World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development 🌍

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development celebrates the richness of global cultures. It's a day to promote mutual understanding and appreciation among diverse communities.

Idea: Organize a virtual cultural fair, featuring presentations, performances, and discussions that highlight the diverse backgrounds of employees. Or, host a Diversity & Inclusion Workshop where a DE&I expert will guide your team through the essentials of building a supportive and inclusive workplace. 

May 27 - Memorial Day (US)

Memorial Day is a solemn day to honor and remember military personnel who have died in service. It's an opportunity to show respect and gratitude for their sacrifices.

Idea: Arrange a virtual moment of silence or memorial service to pay homage to fallen heroes, especially if your workplace has connections to the military

May 28 - Hamburger Day 🍔

Hamburger Day celebrates the iconic and popular American dish. 

Idea: Host a casual lunch or barbecue, allowing employees to unwind and connect over their shared love for hamburgers. Consider setting up a topping station that provides a variety of fun toppings for everyone to customize their burgers!
